Hot Dog! Spotlight on the Dog at Wingham

Conservation News was invited to see how this unique 13th century inn has been given a new lease of life.

In times past the picturesque village of Wingham that nestles in the Kent countryside on the A257 between Canterbury and Sandwich boasted three hostelries of varying appeal. The Dog Inn may well have been the last one a visitor to the village may have chosen to spend some time in. Now however, if the numbers of visitors that are beating a path to its door are anything to go
by, times have well and truly changed. Due to a tasteful and sympathetic refurbishment carried out by General Manager, Marc Bridgen and his incredibly talented Interior Designer mother, Marilyn, the once down at heel inn has been transformed into a stylish restaurant and bar with rooms, that offers a superb selection of drinks including real ales, over 40 gins, fine dining
and en-suite accommodation, in sumptuous surroundings.

The Dog at Wingham’s slogan is understated and beautifully simple: Drink. Eat. Sleep. And there is a classy simplicity that is inherent in the décor. The soft greys and heritage colours, exposed brickwork and timbers, with just the right amount of warm red accents and quirky canine references work wonderfully amongst the oak beams and cosy fireplaces. The effect is instantly welcoming, relaxing and luxurious.

The dining experience offers everything one could hope for too. Head Chef, Tom Dawson and team create culinary masterpieces from the finest quality produce sourced from local suppliers, with menus that are regularly refreshed to reflect seasonal variations, making the most of the abundance of fresh fish, meat and vegetables available from the Garden of England.

The luxurious theme continues upstairs with eight en-suite, individually styled guest-rooms that combine romantic, old world charm with all the modern facilities you could want for your overnight stay, including Hypnos mattresses. The pièce de résistance is the stunning four-poster bed suite, which has to be the  realisation of everyone’s dreamy escape from reality, with vaulted beam ceiling, gorgeous gilt mirrors and of course, the magnificent four poster bed to die for.
